Where to Eat in Essaouira

Since we didn't do much more than laze in the sun and eat on a recent holiday to Morocco, I will share the best places to eat in Essaouira.

Laayoune

Our first night we went with a recommendation of the receptionist at our hotel. Although Laayoune doesn't serve alcohol, we loved it so much, we went back for another meal on our last night. The food is simple and super inexpensive. They offer set meal for around £7.00 and don't scrimp on the size. I went with a lentil soup as a starter which was followed by a chicken and lemon tagine. Dessert consisted of a couple of slices of orange sprinkled with cinnamon, an unexpected combo which worked extremely well.

Taros

This place is great for a lively night out, or at least lively in Essaouiran terms. We were here during ramadan and were told that things are busier outside of ramadan season. So even though Taros was rather empty, we were treated to a lively night out nonetheless. There was live music and even some dancing, but more importantly, the food is awesome and comes with even more awesome views. Try their seafood, it's fab.

La Fromagerie

I wrote an entire blog post about this place, because it was incredibly cool. And cheesy. We loved the food, the setting and the welcoming host. Read more about it here.

La Caravane Cafe

Another restaurant that comes with live entertainment, this time with ethnic Moroccan music. Set in a cosy courtyard of a traditional house within the Medina, you can eat French style food under the stars. It is a bit on the pricey side, but we had the best night of our stay here.

One Up

This place is on the second floor, reached by a slightly hidden staircase. But once you are up there, you will find a home boudoir with little nooks and crannies. Great for intimate dining. The menu is minimal, but what they serve is pretty tasty. They do awesome cocktails as well.

    1. If I am super honest, that was not what I had the La Caravane. My pictures didn't come out great for that dinner. That picture is of chicken wrapped in mille feuille which is called pastilla, I believe. Really tasty.
