Where to Eat in Marrakesh

When looking for a place to eat in Marrakesh in Morocco, it can be a bit overwhelming as there are eateries pretty much on every street corner. Not to mention the guys who are tempting you to come inside and pick their restaurant don't make making a choice much easier.
Here are some of the places we found and more importantly, liked.

Where to Eat in Essaouira

Since we didn't do much more than laze in the sun and eat on a recent holiday to Morocco, I will share the best places to eat in Essaouira.

Laayoune

Our first night we went with a recommendation of the receptionist at our hotel. Although Laayoune doesn't serve alcohol, we loved it so much, we went back for another meal on our last night. The food is simple and super inexpensive. They offer set meal for around £7.00 and don't scrimp on the size. I went with a lentil soup as a starter which was followed by a chicken and lemon tagine. Dessert consisted of a couple of slices of orange sprinkled with cinnamon, an unexpected combo which worked extremely well.

La Fromagerie in Essaouira

If you don't like cheese, there is no point reading this here post as this one is about cheese. And lots of it. It's about a place called La Fromagerie in Morocco.

My friend Rebecca and I were very much drawn to this place after reading raving reviews about it on Tripadvisor, so decided to go and have a look when we were holidaying in Essaouira.

Things to do in Essaouira

Things to do in Essaouira

I love a good beachy holiday, but maybe not one that involves packed beaches, towel reserved loungers and holiday reps. Essaouira is none of that. I can totally recommend a chilled out week in this Moroccan seaside town and if you need a bit of inspiration here are some things to do in Essaouira.

Cooking Course in Essaouira

What could possibly be better than eating ethnic food? Making it yourself or course. So when I was in Morocco last week, my friend and I went on a cooking course in Essaouira.

Staying at a Traditional Dar in Morocco

When travelling to Morocco staying at a traditional Dar is part of the fun. So when I was in Tangier I made an effort to find one and stumbled upon Dar Nour guesthouse.

It's not easy to find Dar Nour within the myriad of small streets within the Kasbah, but we eventually did. With the help of a 'friendly' local who insisted on taking us there and then charging us through the nose when we got there, but that's a different story.

The guesthouse itself was very cosy with lots of little nooks for having a good conversation, quiet corners for reading a book, and hidden rooms for having some minty tea. There are plenty of cushiony chairs and sofas with fluffy pillows where it's very easy to chill out and have a snooze. At first we kind of lost our way around the house with the multitude of hallways, staircases and different floors and terraces that seem to confuse your sense of direction.

The guest rooms were homey and simply decorated in authentic Moroccan style, most with en-suite bathrooms. Our room, the Hafa suite had a private terrace overlooking the city and the Mediterranean where we spent many a dusk watching the sunset.

The best bit about Dar Nour is breakfast. It is served on the rooftop terrace and is a veritable feast of local pastries, breads and fruits. Accompanied by stunning views over the rooftops of Tangier. What a way to greet the morning.

Chilling Out at Hafa Cafe in Tangiers

On a trip to Tangiers, my mum dragged my father and me to the Hafa Cafe. A book by Paul Bowles, called the 'Sheltering Sky' had inspired her to come to Tangiers in the first place and she insisted on visiting the cafe where Paul had spent many hours of his life.

So we went. Now Tangiers is not in the top 5 of best places to visit in Morocco, I know that, but the Hafa Cafe is definitely in the top 5 places to visit in Tangiers.

It's been around since 1921 and over the years it has attracted many artsy types such as artists, singers and writers and even the Beatles and the Stones have been known to come here to chill out. These days it's a popular hangout for locals smoking their shisha pipes as well as tourists who come here to rest their weary feet after a day of sightseeing.

And I could see why. The setting is simply stunning. Hafa Cafe is set on a rocky cliff overlooking the Strait of Gibraltar and on a sunny day the views stretch as far as Spain. It's an open air cafe with terraces that slope down gradually, with lots of secluded nooks and crannies. Lots of privacy guaranteed.

The must try drink is of course the sugar sweet mint tea, poured from a typically Moroccan silver teapot into authentically decorated tea glasses. It's very easy to spend a few lazy hours here, gazing across the Mediterranean. Oh, and don't miss the sunset, obviously. No better spot in Tangiers to see the sun sink in the sea.
