Nordic Food at Rok Smokehouse & Bar

I hadn't been to Spitalfields Market in a while, but when I went back a few weekends ago, I happened on loads of new food stalls. At least, they were new to me. One of them was a food stall run by Rök Smokehouse & Bar. They've got two proper restaurant locations in London; one in Upper Street and one in Shoreditch. Their menu is influenced by old Nordic cooking techniques and they specialise in cured and brined meat dishes which are all cooked on fire and most of them are accompanied by fermented and pickled side dishes. Heart warming dishes for winter weather like duck pate with knackebrod, pork with carawaykraut and pigeon with Jerusalem artichokes.

Swedish Food at KuPP

Swedish restaurants are popping up like mushrooms here in London and I am loving it. Last weekend I had Swedish food at KuPP in the Paddington area.

Flowers and Brew at Hej Coffee Bermondsey

Whatever the Swedes do, they do it with style. And stylish is exactly what Hej Coffee is. It's tucked away in a corner of what is quickly becoming a very trendy Bermondsey Square with tables and beach chairs strewn on the pavement out front.

Scandinavian Kitchen in London

In my London Eats World series I'm on a mission to eat my way around the world without leaving London and this week it's Scandinavia. I’m having  lunch at Scandinavian Kitchen on Great Tichfield Street just off Oxford Circus.

A Swedish Bakery in London

A Swedish Bakery in London

The Swedes are really good at making furniture, writing crime novels and, as I discovered on a lunch break, baking. Hidden in a narrow alley in the heart of Covent Garden, I happened on Bageriet yesterday: a bright and cheery Swedish bakery. A nice and quiet find, in spite of it being in a highly touristy area.

Cosy Bageriet looks like what I expect all bakeries in Sweden look like: kitted out with IKEA style furniture, Swedish ABBA-esque music playing in the background and lots of pastries on display in the window and the counter.

The bakery is a lovely spot to pop in for breakfast or lunch. There are lots of breakfast options and they also serve freshly made sandwiches and salads. You can buy loaves of bread, rolls, biscuits and even custom made cakes. Additionally there are so many eye-pleasing pastries to choose from that you might find it hard to limit your choice to one. It's hard to ignore the display of vanilla hearts, cakes called Josefin, sugar pretzels, hallongrotta (raspberry caves) and lots lots more.

It took me a while to make a choice, but I finally opted for a delicious kanellbullar (cinnamon roll) which I enjoyed with a hot cup of rhubarb and cream flavoured tea. And the other pastries? Well, I will just have to go back and try those as well.
