Learn to Cook and Eat the Caribbean Way

So far I've been eating and blogging about ethnic restaurants here in London, but I hadn't really tried my hand at making it myself. Last weekend though, I was invited to Angella's Kitchen supper club cooking class.

The event was held at Battersea's London Kitchen Project which helps budding chefs getting started in the food industry.

As you know, I have been to my fair share of supper clubs, and I have found that some are more social than others. But at Angella's event, everyone was nudged a little bit more to get to know everyone at the event. Each and every one of us had to stand up and introduce ourselves and pick a random fruit we would love to be. This certainly broke the ice. Then after an overview of what we were going to do, we headed to the kitchen area where tasks were divvied up.

On the menu that night was chicken the Caribbean way with a coconut and bean rice, mixed salad and fried plantains. For the veggies there was a pumpkin and carrot soup with dumplings and plantains.

Everyone got right to it and started chopping, cutting, and slicing. Another group looked after massaging Angella's secret spices and onions into the chicken and frying it straight after. The rice was boiled, the beans added and the plantains fried up. Everyone chipped in and made new friends along the way.

It took a good couple of hours before dinner was ready and we all eagerly tucked into the steaming food. Of course, this took a quarter of the time it took to prepare.

I do love a good supper club, but being actively involved in making the food made it all the more fun.
