Hawaiian Food at Tombo

This week my quest for ethnic restaurants in London had me eating Hawaiian food at Tombo Poké and Matcha Bar. Just to avoid confusion, this type of food has nothing to do with that super popular game everyone seems to be playing these days. It is a raw seafood salad, which is served as an appetiser. Apparently poké is all the rage over in the Hawaiian archipelago and according to trendwatchers, it will be the thing to eat over here as well.

When I googled 'poké restaurants in London' there were quite a few options to choose from already. I headed for Tombo in Soho.

This airy place also doubles as a matcha bar, but I was only interested in the poké. Tombo serves 6 signature poké versions with either salmon, tuna, prawns or chicken. There is a veggie version as well.

They also let you build your own if none of these whets your appetite, which is exactly what I did.

You choose a base, your seafood or chicken, then your sauce and mix-ins, like edamame or cucumber and then lastly, the topping.

I went for a small size poké with a base of courgette noodles with raw slices of salmon and a sesame based soy sauce. I went for a cucumber mix in and some fried shallot onions sprinkled on top.

To wash it down and went for a glass of 3 year bancha tea, kind of like a green tea, but lower on the caffeine.

I loved the food bowl which was full of flavours and light on the stomach. For me this was okay as after this late lunch I was meeting a friend at Pix Bar for some Basque tapas. However if you are looking for a more filling lunch or dinner, I would go for the bigger size and some sides.

  1. Do they do veggie versions. Like the sound of the tea. I drink a lot of green tea.

  2. Tombo in Soho sounds like a lovely place to eat! I must admit, I haven't tried much Hawaiian food but it sounds really delicious. I like that they build your own too and so much choice! Really nice post, thanks for sharing xx

    1. There is another Tombo in Kensington, but that one serves Japanese food which I guess is a little bit similar. Great food.
