High Wine at Denovo in Breda

Living in the UK, I have had my share of afternoon teas, cream teas and high teas, but my very own people back home in the Netherlands have come up with something even better: The high wine.
And if wine is not quite your thing, you can go for a high beer as well.

It works pretty much the same as any afternoon tea, except for the fact that the tea has been replaced by wine of course, and the finger sandwiches, scones and pastries by savoury canapés and bites.

The high wine/beer seems to be pretty popular as I found that many restaurants in my home town Breda offer it on their menu. I opted for a restaurant and wine bar a called Denovo, overlooking the Breda harbour.

We were welcomed with a glass of Martini champagne, which was accompanied by a generous bowl of Indonesian peanuts and mixed olives.

The second glass of wine was a chardonnay from Mendoza in Argentina. It was served with a large bowl of fresh bread and three dips: aioli, garlic mayo and a tapenade. We also had one California roll with salmon and a pretty looking crisp bread topped with a tuna mousse.

The third glass of wine was a malbec also from Mendoza. This was served with pork chops drizzled with a basil infused oil, a pita bread with a mini merguez sausage and a bowl of chunky chips and more garlic mayo.

The fourth glass of wine was supposed to be a dessert wine, however the waitress advised us that most people usually think it's too sweet. She gave us the option to try it or have another glass of the white or red we had before. I went for the white as it had gone down rather smoothly. It came with a lovely looking dessert. It was a chocolate cup filled with passion fruit sherbet, resting on a slice of lemon soaked cake. I loved the sherbet, but the rest was just a tad bit too sugary.

I had a fab time and thought it was a wonderful way to spend an evening, trying different wines and sharing food and may be something that will catch on in the UK. I hope.
