The first thing that strikes you when walking in, is the decor, which I can only describe as a cross between my granny's living room and something I've seen in My Big Fat Gypsy Wedding. The food however, is divine. As it turns out Lithuanian food is very comforting, especially when the weather Gods decide to put the thermostat on subzero.
The potato seems to be a very popular ingredient in Lithuania and the dishes we ordered varied between Cepelinai (potatoe dumplings), Blynai (potatoe pancakes), Bulvinių kukulių sriuba (minced potatoes). I opted for the Balandėliai (cabbage stuffed with meat and mash) and washed it down with some 'kvas', a drink made of fermenting bread, berries, caraway seeds or honey. It sounds strange, but it tastes great.
The food was great, the atmosphere cosy and when I got home it really felt as if I was coming home from a mini getaway. Even though I only went to Leytonstone.
